FC Ashdod was founded in 1999, after Hapoel Ashdod FC (founded in 1957) and Maccabi Ironi Ashdod FC (founded in 1961) were united. Hapoel Ashdod FC was the popular team in the city, despite the fact it never played in the first division. On the other hand, Ironi Ashdod FC which was founded after a unite between Maccabi and Beitar Ashdod, had reached the National League (Premier League at the time) for the first time in 1993. Its peak achievement recorded in the National cup games of the 97/98 season, in which it had reached the semi-finals but lost 5:0 to Maccabi Haifa FC. In 1999, as mentioned, under the municipality pressures had made the team signing a union contract and become one team called FC Ashdod.
Unite Ashdod FC's opening game was in the season of 1999/2000 and ended in a 6:0 win over Maccabi Netanya FC , starring Baruch Dego and Alon Hazan. Later on that season the team kept losing games and the coach Rami Levy was dismissed, but then the team got stabled and finished the season in the 8th place. In the following season, under the guidance of Miro Ben Shimon, Dego was sold to Maccabi Tel Aviv FC and Ashdod FC was in the bottom of the table. The coach got replaced again, this time by Elisha Levy who led the team into an impressive comeback: 10 games in a row without a loss, including a dramatically win against Bnei Yehuda FC in the second last match day. Nilash's, Shitrit's and Fadida's goals kept the "BLUES" from relegating to the second league.
Against all expectations, the season of 2001/2002 began just fine, but the main turn in the season was the signing of Andeji Cubica. The talented striker, alongside Asi Tubi in offense, led Ashdod FC to the top and got it even to the Toto cup final in which it was beaten by Hapoel Tel Aviv FC. The A-Team "Tubica" together with the young players Yaniv Azran and Hanan Fadida kept the momentum and placed the team in 4th place holding an Intertoto pass in the pocket.
The following season was opened with a first performance in the European competition, but Ashdod FC lost the game in the second round against the Bulgarian Mark Dufniza FC and got relegated from the Intertoto Cup. Also in the Israeli league the team didn’t gain many successes and finished in the 7th place. The season of 2002/2003 started with new uniforms colored in red and yellow and continued with harsh relegation struggles. During the season the club signed Shay Holzman and he kept the team from relegating to the second league.
FC Ashdod made a dramatic change: new surprising signings like Yossi Abuksis, Haim Revivo, Asi Domb and Ilan Bachar marked Jackie Ben Zakan's team as one of the championship contenders. But as always, the more to expect- the less to receive, "Red and Yellows" got into a crisis and struggled at the bottom. Its peak record came only a year later, in finance stars less season, unlike in the former season. With Azran and Turgeman leading, the team performed very well and finished 3rd in the league, alongside playing in the Toto cup's final which got it in the UEFA cup, the highest achievement of the club until today.
After winning a team from San Marino in the beginning of 2005/2006 season, Ashdod FC was dismissed from the European competition after losing against Domzale FC. In the Israeli league the team's performances were middling and ended in the 8th place. In the season later Ashdod FC lost in the semi-finals of the National cup game and was disappointing in the league. 2007/2008 season started with Alon Hazan as head coach, who watched his players losing game after game and had to resign. Dimitar Mcrive as a striker kept the team from relegating to the second league in the last match day against Maccabi Haifa FC.
Ashdod FC's next season ended only in the 8th place. In the -2010/2011 season the club signed the English coach John Gregory, who failed and was replaced by Yossi Mizrahi. Ashdod FC again failed to impress and finished in 12th place. The following year the team achieved a record achievement with five wins in the first five match days, but continued less well and ended the season in 7th place.
Although the season of 2013/2014 started with Nir Klinger on the side lines and promising acquisitions players, the fans were left disappointed again watching the team struggling for staying in the lower playoffs.
